With a salary of $174,000 per year, members of Congress make more than 80% of American households. Stunted salary growth and limited perksThe salaries for members of Congress haven't budged in nearly 15 years. Historically, Democrats have been more willing to push for higher pay for members of Congress, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. For simplicity's sake, let's put the number at $274,000 — a $100,000 raise for members of Congress. Nor is jacking up lawmakers' salaries likely to be a panacea that solves every problem in a troubled institution.

CNN —House Democrats have begun internal discussions about how to deal with the prospects of a chaotic situation: The possibility that Speaker Kevin McCarthy could lose his job in an unprecedented vote on the floor. One of the strategies being discussed by Democrats is to vote “present” or vote to kill it all together if a motion to oust McCarthy is brought to the floor. Bacon warned that he would cut a deal with Democrats if they reach an impasse with conservative hardliners. Democrats considering bailing out McCarthy say it wouldn’t necessarily stop there. House Democrats are annoyed with President Joe Biden and Republicans can't get enough of it. In the last month, Biden has twice withheld vetoes on GOP-led bills that most House Democrats opposed – and after the White House signaled that Biden opposed them, too. However, before a Senate vote Wednesday night, the White House put out the word that Biden wouldn't veto the bill. House Republicans' campaign arm on Wednesday is seizing on the schism, including a popcorn emoji in an email highlighting such quotes from House Democrats. "House Democrats remain rip-roaring angry at the White House for once again exposing their extremism to voters," said Will Reinert, of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The move is aimed at propping up domestic solar manufacturers, which have struggled to compete with cheap panels made overseas - often by Chinese companies. A Commerce Department probe last year found that some solar panel makers were dodging U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made goods by moving their products through Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. New proposed duties on imports from those countries will not kick in until June of 2024 because of a two-year waiver from Biden. Months later, the Commerce Department issued a preliminary decision to extend existing tariffs on Chinese solar products to goods from those nations. The White House has said the tariff exemption will serve as a bridge while the U.S. sector ramps up.

Some of this was already revealed in 2020 when The New York Times obtained decades of Trump's tax information. "If this injustice can happen to President Trump, it can happen to all Americans without cause," Cheung wrote. US Treasury officials gave Neal Trump's tax filings for 2015-2020 in late November. Neal and other Democratic tax writers have been deliberating about how to handle Trump's tax documents for weeks.
